The University is proud to support equal access to higher education and is pleased to offer Sanctuary Scholarships consisting of full tuition support and a stipend for living expenses to applicants who wish to study at Newcastle University.

The Newcastle University Sanctuary Scholarships are designed to help asylum-seeking and refugee students progress to higher level studies. The university is a United Kingdom public research university based in Newcastle upon Tyne, North East England.

The university has overseas campuses in Malaysia and Singapore. Newcastle University is a red brick university and a member of the Russell Group, which is a research-intensive association of UK universities.

The history of Newcastle University dates back to the School of Medicine and Surgery (later the Faculty of Medicine), founded in 1834, and the Faculty of Physical Sciences (later renamed Armstrong College), founded in 1871.

The Colleges of Newcastle merged to form King’s College in 1937. The University of Newcastle is a member of the Russell Group of UK research-intensive universities.

The University of Newcastle is ranked in the top 200 of most world rankings and in the top 25 of most UK rankings. It is ranked 146th by QS, 114th by Leiden and 171st by Times Higher Education globally in 2018, while nationally, the university is ranked 22nd by the Complete University Guide and 27th by the Guardian for 2018.

Most of Newcastle University’s undergraduate courses are ranked in the top 20 by the country’s Comprehensive University Guide, with several subjects ranked in the top 10, such as Dentistry (3rd), Medicine (9th), Linguistics (3rd) Art and Design (1st), Architecture (5th) and Communication and Media Studies (1st).

The Newcastle University Sanctuary Scholarships cover each applicant’s tuition and living expenses.

 

Eligibility for Newcastle University Sanctuary Scholarships

  • Only asylum seekers are eligible for the Newcastle University Sanctuary Scholarships. Please note that children of asylum seekers and unaccompanied children of asylum seekers (e.g. migrant children under the age of 18) are also eligible.
  • All applicants with refugee status (ineligible for government funding of student funding) are ineligible.
  • Applicants who have received humanitarian protection, discretionary leave to remain as a result of an asylum application, or children of one parent in this position will also be considered for Newcastle University Sanctuary Scholarships scholarships.
  • You must have applied for a place in a degree program at the University of Newcastle. Priority will be given to candidates applying for their first degree.
  • Each applicant must be residing in the North East of England (Tyne and Wear, County Durham, Northumberland, Cleveland and North Cumbria) at the time they apply for scheme consideration.

  • To apply, applicants will be required to provide proof of their immigration status and a reference. Note that the reference must be from someone who has known the candidate for a significant period of time and who is aware of their personal circumstances.
