Canada is a country in North America. Its ten provinces and three territories stretch from the Atlantic to the Pacific and north to the Arctic Ocean, covering 9.98 million square kilometers (3.85 million sq mi), making second largest country worldwide by total area. Its southern and western border with the United States, which spans 8,891 kilometers (5,525 mi), is the longest binational land border in the world. Canada’s capital is Ottawa, and its three largest metropolitan areas are Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.
Indigenous peoples have continuously inhabited what is now Canada for thousands of years. From the 16th century onwards, British and French expeditions explored and then settled along the Atlantic coast. In 1763, as a result of various armed conflicts, France ceded almost all of its colonies in North America. With the union of three British North American colonies through Confederation, Canada was formed as a federal dominion of four provinces In 1867. This initiated an addition of provinces and territories and a process of increasing autonomy for the United Kingdom. This expanded autonomy was highlighted by the Statute of Westminster of 1931 and culminated in the Canada Act of 1982, which severed the vestiges of legal dependence on the UK Parliament.
The Government of Canada is responsible for the federal administration of Canada. A constitutional monarchy, the Crown is the only agency, taking on distinct roles: the executive, the legislature, like the Crown in Parliament; and the courts.
However, three institutions – the Privy Council (conventionally); the Parliament of Canada; and the judiciary, respectively – exercise the powers of the Crown. The Government of Canada may refer to the collective set of all three institutions or, more specifically, to the executive – ministers of the Crown (the Cabinet) and the federal public service (which the Cabinet directs) – which collectively calls itself the Government of Canada. , or more formally, Her Majesty’s Government.
In both senses, the present construction was founded in Confederation through the Constitutional Act of 1867 – as a federal constitutional monarchy, where the Canadian Crown acts as the key, or the most basic building block, of its Westminster-style parliamentary democracy. .
The Crown is the establishment of the executive, legislative and judicial branches of the Canadian government. The monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, is personally represented by a governor-general (currently Mary Simon) and is the head of state. A Prime Minister “Justin Trudeau” is the head of government who is invited by the Crown to form a government after securing the confidence of the House of Commons, which is usually determined through the election of enough members of a single political party into a government federal election to provide the majority of seats in Parliament, forming a ruling party.
However, other elements of governance are defined in the rest of the Canadian Constitution, which includes written statutes in addition to court decisions, and unwritten conventions developed over the centuries.
Legitimately, the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada is the body that advises the sovereign or her representative in the exercise of executive power. This task is almost exclusively performed by a committee within the Queen’s Privy Council, known as the Cabinet, which collectively sets the government’s policies and priorities for the country.
The Government of Canada is made up of ministers from the Crown and is chaired by the Prime Minister. The sovereign appoints Cabinet members on the advice of the Prime Minister who, by convention, are selected from the House of Commons or, less frequently, the Senate.
Also, during its term of office, the government must maintain the confidence of the House of Commons, and certain important motions, such as passing the government budget, are considered confidence motions.
