The University is a public research university in London, England, specializing in the arts, design, humanities and social sciences. The university is a constituent faculty of the University of London.
The university was established in 1891 as the Goldsmiths Technical and Recreation Institute by the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths in New Cross, London. Goldsmiths, University of London was acquired by the University of London in 1904 and renamed Goldsmiths’ College.
However, nearly 20% of students come from outside the UK and 52% of all undergraduates are mature students aged 21 or over at the start of their studies. About a third of Goldsmiths students are graduate students.
In 2017, Goldsmiths’ Media and Communications department was named 2nd best in the UK and 8th worldwide, but in 2020 that department’s ranking dropped to 18th in the UK. At Goldsmiths, University of London, the overall national ratings are around 70th, and at TEF Goldsmiths it has achieved a Bronze rating, the lowest possible rating.
The Goldsmiths Company was founded in the 12th century as a medieval guild for goldsmiths, goldsmiths and jewelers. The Livery Company committed the founding of its new Institute to the promotion of technical skill, knowledge, health and general well-being among men and women of the industrial, working and artisan classes.
The main Institute was located at New Cross, in the former building of the Royal Naval School. This building, which was designed by architect John Shaw Jr, is now known as the Richard Hoggart Building and remains the main building on the campus today.
In 1904 Goldsmiths, the University was combined with the University of London and re-established as Goldsmiths’ College. At that time, Goldsmiths was the largest teacher training institution in the country. The training functions were later expanded to include refresher courses for teachers, the University’s Graduate Certificate in Education, and an Art Teachers Certificate course. The college also had its own day care.
However, shortly after the merger in 1907, Goldsmiths added a new arts building, designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield, to the rear of the main building. During World War II, it was decided to transfer faculty and students from the faculty to University College, Nottingham, a decision that proved sensible both at the time and in retrospect, as the main building was hit by an incendiary bomb and destroyed. in 1940 and was not finally repaired until 1947.
