Who Can Apply?

Age

  • To apply for the internship, you must be at least 20 years old.

Academic Qualifications

At the time of application, you must meet one of the following criteria:

  • You are currently enrolled in a graduate programme (Master’s degree, PhD, or equivalent).
  • You have recently graduated (within the last 12 months) from a Master’s degree or PhD programme.

Note: Candidates who have completed their Bachelor’s degree but are not enrolled in a graduate programme are not eligible.

For secretarial or technical/professional roles, candidates must be in their final year of a specialized technical/professional school or institution, or have graduated within the last 12 months.

Language Proficiency

You must have an excellent command of English or French (both written and spoken). Knowledge of the second language is an asset and may be required for some positions at UNESCO headquarters.

Computer Skills

A strong knowledge of computer systems and office-related software is essential.

Teamwork and Communication Skills

Internship Details

Duration

The minimum duration of an internship is one month, and the maximum is six months.

Visa and Travel Arrangements

Interns are responsible for obtaining their visa and covering all travel expenses to the location where the internship takes place.

Health Insurance

Interns must provide proof of comprehensive health insurance valid in the country where the internship is undertaken. UNESCO offers limited workplace accident insurance.

Medical Certificate

Before starting the internship, you will need to submit a medical certificate confirming you are fit to work. Detailed medical records (e.g., blood tests, X-rays) are not required.

 

Required Documents

You must submit the following documents before starting your internship:

  • ID (identification document).
  • Certificate of Enrollment (if currently a student).
  • Diploma (if you recently graduated).

Leave

Interns are entitled to 2.5 days of leave for each month of their internship.

 

How to Apply for the UNESCO Internship Programme?

Step 1: Prepare Your Documents

Before starting the application, make sure you have the following documents ready:

  • Motivation letter.
  • Updated résumé.
  • An unofficial translation of any documents not in English or French.

Step 2: Complete the Application Form

The application must be submitted in English or French. You will have only one hour to complete the process, so it’s important to have all your documents ready beforehand.

Step 3: Submit the Application

Once submitted, your application will be available for review by UNESCO managers globally. The selection process can take up to six months, and only successful candidates will be contacted. If you do not hear back within six months, your application was not successful.

Step 4: Post-Submission Considerations

Even if you meet all the eligibility criteria, there is no guarantee of placement, as the number of applicants exceeds available positions. Additionally, the internship is unpaid, with no financial compensation provided.
