University of Porto has several scholarship programs open to international students in 2022. The Merit Scholarship Programs award a monetary prize equivalent to five national minimum wages to the best students of the Bachelor’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s or Integrated Master’s degrees. In addition to this scholarship in Portugal, the Social Services of the University of Porto (SASUP) provide a monthly scholarship to disadvantaged students.

International students from the EU and students from countries with a cooperation protocol with Portugal can benefit from this annual renewable aid. The University of Porto grants undergraduate, master’s and doctoral scholarships for research projects with a minimum duration of three months. This scholarship in Portugal has the usual duration of one year and is renewable for up to three years.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCING

In order to guarantee equal opportunities for admission to its courses, as well as to reward the merit of students with outstanding academic performance, the University of Porto promotes and/or sponsors a wide range of financial support for its students.

Among them are:

  • SASUP Scholarships
  • Merit Scholarships
  • scientific grants
  • Other supports

SASUP Scholarships

Students enrolled in a bachelor’s, master’s or integrated master’s degree course at the U.Porto can apply for grants awarded by the Social Services of the University of Porto (SASUP).

The grant consists of a monthly grant to help with the expenses of attending the University of Porto. Economically disadvantaged students are therefore supported to bear the financial burden not only of school supplies and tuition fees, but also of housing, food, transport and other costs.

Merit Scholarships

  • In addition to regular scholarships, the U.Porto annually awards merit scholarships to students ranked at the top of their class. This scholarship consists of a monetary award – equivalent to five national minimum wages in force – and is intended for students enrolled in undergraduate, master’s or integrated master’s degrees who demonstrate exceptional academic performance, regardless of their socio-economic situation.
  • Merit Scholarships are awarded in accordance with the General Rules for Awarding Merit Scholarships to Higher Education Students. The U.Porto and its faculties are responsible for the selection of awarded students, according to the criteria and requirements established in the Regulation.
  • Every year, the U.Porto also awards a set of Incentive Awards to the best 1st year students from each of its 14 schools/faculties. The awards are presented during the University Day commemorative ceremony.

Scientific Grants

Through its schools and research centres, the U.Porto sponsors and awards scientific initiation grants and research grants to holders of a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree to obtain scientific training in research projects or in research projects or in scientific and technological institutions. The scholarship has a normal duration of one year, renewable for up to three years, and cannot be awarded for periods of less than three consecutive months.

Other supports

Attending a course at the University of Porto can be financed with study and research grants awarded by external institutions, government entities or partner institutions of the U.Porto through national and international agreements and partnerships.

Candidates for these scholarships are, for example, students from Portuguese-speaking African Countries (PALOP), based on the historical ties that unite Portugal with Angola, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe and Mozambique.
